In an article from Mindanao Daily News, Iligan City Mayor Celso Regencia said that the groundbreaking ceremony of the P583-million public market signaled the beginning of the project which will initially include cleaning of the lot where the market is to be constructed.
It can be recalled that the 60-year old public market was demolished last year and approximately 1,600 vendors were relocated to a temporary market near the Tambo Integrated Bus and Jeepney Terminal.
The new two-storey public market will have an area of approximately 9,736 square meters. It will have a cargo lifter, escalator and a roof deck which will be a venue for a night market with food stalls.
Virginia Junsan, head of the city's Economic Enterprise Development and Management Office (EEDMO), said that the new market will have 1,269 stalls and can accommodate 132 vehicles to park around the building.
The project is expected to be completed in 18 months according to the BM Marketing representative Mark Tiu, a Leyte-based contractor. He further added that the materials and workers of the project will come from Iligan.
